Will social network sites transform ads?

Depending on your age and memory, last week was a week of radically new or reassuringly old developments in the advertising industry.

To Mark Zuckerberg, who is 23 and the boss of Facebook, a popular social-networking Web site, it was the former. Standing in front of about 250 mostly middle-aged advertising executives on Nov. 6, he announced Facebook was offering them a new deal.

"For the last hundred years media has been pushed out to people," he said, "but now marketers are going to be a part of the conversation." Using his firm's new approach, he claimed, advertisers will be able to piggyback on the "social actions" of Facebook users, since "people influence people."

Zuckerberg's language was strikingly similar to that of Paul Lazarsfeld and Elihu Katz in their book "Personal Influence," a media-studies classic from 1955.

They argued that marketers do not simply broadcast messages to a passive mass audience, but rather that they target certain individuals, called "opinion leaders." These individuals then spread, confirm or negate the messages of advertisers through their own "social relationships," by word of mouth or personal example.

Lazarsfeld and Katz, of course, assumed that most of these conversations and their implicit marketing messages would remain inaudible. That firms might be able to eavesdrop on this chatter first became conceivable in the 1990s, with the rise of the Internet. Thus the main thesis of "The Cluetrain Manifesto," written in 1999, was that "markets are conversations" which the Web can make transparent.

Zuckerberg's underlying idea is therefore hardly new. But, says Randall Rothenberg, the boss of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, a trade association, the announcements this week by Facebook and its larger rival, MySpace, which has a similar ad system, could amount to a big step forward in conversational marketing.

Google Confirms Facebook Violation, No Personal Data Stored

via
allfacebook - the unofficial facebook blog

Earlier this week I reported that applications were secretly transferring personal data to Google via their AdWords system and this was a clear violation of Facebook’s terms of service (TOS). It turns out that no personal data was being stored but some of the AdWords integration was in violation of Facebook’s TOS. Eric Eldon received a response from a Google spokesperson:

“We recently allowed some application partners to send us additional keywords to improve ad performance. A limited number of the keywords sent to Google did not comply with the developer’s agreement with Facebook. When we realized this conflict, we asked the partners to discontinue sending those keywords. We are no longer using those keywords. No personally identifiable information was exchanged between Google and the application developers.”

OpenSocial - Google Code

OpenSocial - Google Code

The web is more interesting when you can build apps that easily interact with your friends and colleagues. But with the trend towards more social applications also comes a growing list of site-specific APIs that developers must learn.

OpenSocial provides a common set of APIs for social applications across multiple websites. With standard JavaScript and HTML, developers can create apps that access a social network's friends and update feeds.

» Google’s OpenSocial APIs pick up steam–MySpace and Bebo | Between the Lines | ZDNet.com

Speaking during a press conference about MySpace joining the OpenSocial train, Google CEO Eric Schmidt painted the big picture. “The broader story is the Web has moved to the next state. We knew the Web would have social framework and we knew it would be would be standard, open and extensible.” Schmidt said the Google had been working for more than a year with MySpace in the social area.

MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe said, “OpenSocial APIs will be the defacto development platform for social application development.” Until recently, MySpace was working on its own markup languages, similar to what Facebook has done.

Bebo, another popular social network, has also signed on to join the Google OpenSocial train. So far Google has amassed about a dozen partners in addition to MySpace and Bebo–Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, Ning, Oracle, Google orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING.

Candidates Pander to Geeks in the Webbiest Campaign Ever

Online campaigning used to be a geek niche, the province of alternative fund-raising geniuses and self-righteous meet-up organizations. Now just about everyone running for president is jockeying to show how socially networked, virally videoed, and blog-commented they are. Still, it's not easy stumping in the future. We checked out the six leading candidates' online efforts, and while there's a lot to like, we saw plenty to suggest that this geek thing is still pretty new — and probably temporary. After the primaries, you just know the candidates will tack back to the jocks and preppies.

Google and Friends to Gang Up on Facebook - New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 30 — Google and some of the Web’s leading social networks are teaming up to take on the new kid on the block — Facebook.

On Thursday, an alliance of companies led by Google plans to begin introducing a common set of standards to allow software developers to write programs for Google’s social network, Orkut, as well as others, including LinkedIn, hi5, Friendster, Plaxo and Ning.

The strategy is aimed at one-upping Facebook, which last spring opened its service to outside developers. Since then, more than 5,000 small programs have been built to run on the Facebook site, and some have been adopted by millions of the site’s users. Most of those programs tap into connections among Facebook friends and spread themselves through those connections, as well as through a “news feed” that alerts Facebook users about what their friends are doing.

The New York Times learned of the alliance’s plan from people briefed on the matter. Google, which had planned to introduce the alliance at a party on Thursday evening, later confirmed the plan.

“It is going to forestall Facebook’s ability to get everyone writing just for Facebook,” said a person with knowledge of the plans who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the alliance. The group’s platform, which is called OpenSocial, is “compatible across all the companies,” that person said.

“Facebook got the jump by announcing the Facebook platform and getting the traction they got. This is an open alternative to that,” the person also said.

The alliance includes business software makers Salesforce.com and Oracle, who are moving to let third-party programmers write applications that can be accessed by their customers. The start of OpenSocial comes just a week after Google lost to Microsoft in a bid to invest in Facebook and sell advertising on the social network’s pages outside the United States. And it comes just before the expected introduction by Facebook of an advertising system next week, which some analysts believe could compete with Google’s.

Joe Kraus, director of product management at Google, said that the alliance’s conversations preceded Microsoft’s investment in Facebook. “Obviously, we would love for them to be part of it,” Mr. Kraus said of Facebook. Facebook declined to comment.

Facebook’s success with its platform has proved that the combination of social data and news feeds is a powerful mechanism to help developers distribute their software. They are now seen as must-have functions for many Internet companies. Other social networks and Web companies, including MySpace and the instant messaging service Meebo.com, have announced plans to open their sites in similar ways.
